What are Flexible Printed Circuits?

A flexible printed circuit, or flex circuit, consists of a metallic layer of traces, typically copper, bonded to a dielectric layer, usually polyimide. The metal layer thickness can range from less than 0.0001 inches to over 0.010 inches, while the dielectric thickness varies from 0.0005 inches to 0.010 inches. The metal can be bonded to the dielectric with adhesive, though “adhesiveless” laminates are becoming popular due to their superior performance and thermal properties. Other bonding methods, such as vapor deposition, can also be used.

To prevent oxidation, exposed copper surfaces are often coated with a protective layer, commonly gold or solder, due to their conductivity and durability. Dielectric materials are used in non-contact areas to shield the circuitry from oxidation and electrical shorts.

Flexible printed circuits are often mistaken for printed circuit boards (PCBs), but they differ significantly in design, functionality, and fabrication. Despite the name, most flexible printed circuits are not made through traditional printing; they typically use photo imaging or laser imaging for pattern definition.
